My knees had been bothering me as long ago as the fall of 1985 when I had
a series of tests innitiated by Dr. Linde, to whom I was sent during Dr.
Lewis' period out for heart surgery. An xray was taken of my right knee as
this time and I was sent to someone whose name I cannot at the moment recal.
At one time, I was given some sample 250mg Naprosyn which seemed to little
or no good and had some side effects so I stopped taking them and simply
put up with the pain.
When both knees started to hurt all the time, I talked with Mrs McKenzie
and she suggested Ecotrin, which would help for a period of time and then
would became ineffective unless I would go without it for several days
after which it would again help.
When the knees got worse I talked with Dr. Pietz (at The Sequoias) who
prescribed Clinoril which I started taking on Sept 23.
Dr Pietz also had my urine tested and found a minor infection. He
prescribed some Septra DS tablets ordering them directly. When these
arrived, I talked with the nurse (Shona) remarking that I was sure that I
had had an adverse reaction to such medication but she assured me that
there was no such indication in my record so I started taking them on Oct
3rd. Soon, I began to have serious side effects, in particular my right
leg would get very cold and then go numb and I would seem to be in a bit
of a haze.
After a few days the symptoms became truely alarming. Finally, one evening,
I had a great deal of trouble in restoring any feeling in my right leg and
when I finally did, my right ankle began to hurt in a way that was quite
different from the basic arthritic pains in my knees.
I thought that matters would get better after a nights sleep but I was
not able to get much sleep. The next morning I tried to reach Dr. Pietz
but was unable to reach him. I told my troubles to the nurse
(possibly Dr. Pietz' nurse at th Medical Center) and she consulted with
someone and came back with the suggestion that I stop taking the Septra,
which I had already done and also stop the Clinoril and come in to see Dr.
Brenneman at The Sequoias the next morning.
Dr. Brenneman has undoubtedly reported the situation since that time.
